Brief History

This unit was established at Tidal River on WIlson's Promontory, Victoria in February 1941 to train men destined for the Independent Companies. Eight Australian and two New Zealand Companies were formed and trained here before the unit was moved to Canungra in Queensland in November 1942 to take advantage of the more appropriate jungle terrain. On arrival in Canungra it was re-titled 1st Australian Commando Training Battalion. In September they were renamed 1st Australian Commando Training Squadron, and finally in February 1944 1st Australian Cavalry (Commando) Taining Squadron which continued to provide reinforcements to the Commando Squadrons until the end of the war.
