Brief History
There was no Military Hospital in existence in Victoria at the beginning of the war in 1914, except for a small Hospital at Queenscliff, for the accommodation of the Permanent Artillery at the Heads. When the need to establish one arose, use was made of the Police Hospital, which was nearing completion, on St Kilda road but as yet unoccupied. Accommodation was limited to about 40 beds with an operating theatre. This building was to form the nucleus of the later Base Hospital, known as No. 5 A.G.H. (Australian General Hospital), capable of accommodating 600 patients. The first patients were admitted in March 1915.
