Brief History
In 1940 Western Command Forward Postal Unit was nominally raised but only partially mobilised in January 1942 in Perth. Following a review of postal arrangements the unit was renamed WA Line of Communication Postal Unit. Yet another review led to the unit again changing its designation, this time in November 1942 to 4th Australian Base Postal Unit. However, only No 1 Section which operated the 4th Base Post Office and No 3 Section, which was used as a training depot were raised. No 2 Section was raised in early 1943 for transfer to Geraldton, but troop numbers fell and it was not required there, remaining in Perth carrying out normal Line of Communication Postal duties until it was disbanded in late 1943. No 3 Section was disbanded in July 1944, while No 1 Section continued to operate 4th Base Post Office until the end of the war.
