Brief History

This unit was formed in December 1942 when the 18th Australian Employment Company was split. The new 35th Company moved to Cairns in North Queensland in March 1943 from where platoons were based at Innisfail, Atherton and Baronta, with deetachments at Brookhill and Hughenton. The entire company moved to Port Moresby during August 1943 to operate the 9 Mile Quarry. In October 1943 4 Platoon was disbanded in April 1944, and the unit took on a new name 35th Australian Works Company. In May 1944 they took over the running of the sawmill, before returning to AUstralia in September.


After leave they reassembled at Enoggera near Brisbane, working in the Brisbane area untilJuly 1945 when theymoved to St Ives in New South Wales, and then to Frechs Forrest in August.
