Brief History

Intended to be raised in March 1942, it appears that they were formed prior to arriving at Barrine in North Queensland in January 1943 as the 2nd Mobile Meteorological Unit. In March 1943 they were renamed 2nd Mobile Meteorological Flight, and by June 1943 they had relocated to Kairi, and then to Mareeba in July before moving in support of the 7th Australian Infantry Division to Port Moresby in September 1943.

A detachment was sent to Nadzab and then the Ramu Valley while the main unit remained in Port Moresby attached to RAA headquarters, New Guinea Force. In February 1944 the detachment was relieved and then in May the complete unit returned to Australia where they reassembled at Ravenshoe after a period of leave, and joined the 9th Australian Infantry Division. With the 9th Division tasked with the capture of Tarakan in Borbeo, the unit moved with 9th Division HQ to Morotai in April 1945. While a detachment landed at Tarakan in May, the main unit landed at Labuan in June 1945.
