Brief History

Originally raised to support the 24th Australian Infantry Brigade, it was formed in August 1940 at Melville Camp before moving to Northam in October where their strong association with the 2/28th Australian infantry Battalion commenced. In October 1940 the 24th Brigade was transferred to the 9th Division and in January 1941 they sailed to the Middle East, finishing their training in Palestine before moving to Egypt where they participated in the routing of Italian forces before being involved in the retreat to Tobruk in the face of Rommel's Africa Corps.

They served at Tobruk with distinction with a casualty list equal to more than 50% of their strength before being withrawn to Palestine to rebuild in September 1941. The remnants of the unit were absorbed into the 2/3rd Australian Anti-Tank Regiment
