Brief History
The 23rd Australian Labour Company (Koepangese) was to be raised in Fremmantle from Timor and Javanese refugees who had escaped from the Netherlands East Indies. Primarily fishermen they were manning a lugger in Juien Bay in September 1943 and in October the unit was renamed 23rd Australian Employment Company. Few records exist other that they were disbanded in February 1943. . A number of the Koepangese from the 23rd Co became members of Z Force's sabotage units, sent to report on and infiltrate Japanese-occupied Timor
