Brief History
This unit was raised in May 1940 at Ingleburn, New South Wales and a Section at Puckapunyal in Victoria. Each section had both supply and tansport elements to support an ANti-Aircraft Regiment. In October 1940 they moved to Bonegilla before leaving for the Middle East in April 1941. They were at Amiriya in May 1941, Dimra in Palestine from August and Baalbck in Syria in November. Sections also served at Maaten Bagush, Haifa, Beragini, Rayak, Tripoli, Talia and Mezze before tehy concentrated at Kilo 89 in February 1942. With the Japanese now involved in the war they returned to Australia in March 1942.
Gathering at Kensington in South Australia they were converted to a five platoon structure in July 1942 and then moved to Alice Springs to service the convoy route from Alice Springs to Larrimah. They were renamed 2/142nd Australian General Transport Company in August 1942, and remaine din the Norterh Territory until April 1944 for Kensington in NSW where they were brought up to strength before moving to Ravenshoe in north Queensland during July 1944. Here they re-organised and re-equiped into three independent platoons and a workshop platoon, equipped with 4 x 4 trucks. They spent soem time in the Atherton area awaiting a role in Borneo. In April 1945 they moved to the staging area at Morotai. In May elements of the unit landed at Tarakan, and in June others were involves in the landing at Brooketon in Brunei. Company HQ and the remainder of the unit landed at Labuan, and the 2/16th Platoon moved to Sarawak.
