Brief History

The 104th Reserve Motor Transport Company was fully mobilised at Broadmeadows during December 1941, with some of the unit already on duty in Melbourne. After setting up, they moved to Geelong and then to Fisherman's Bend in February 1942, with detachments at Portsea, Queenscliff and Nepean. By May they had established new detachments at Dandenong and Geelong. In June the Company HQ moved to St Kilda Showground where in July 1942 the unit was re-organised as the 118th Australian General Transport Company with four platoons.

In January 1943 they moved to the Northern Territory where they were based at 23 Mile (south of Darwin) and undertook general transport work in the Darwin area. In May 1943 a detachment moved to Adelaide River, and in September another to Mataranka, but by December both detachments had returned to base. In May 1944 the Company was re-organised with five platoons. As troop numbers decreased they moved closer to Darwin and in May 195 the Company moved to McMinns (13 Mile), with detachments at Darwin and Noonamah. General transport duties continued around Darwin for the rest of the war and by then (August 1945) the Company was in Bagot road, Darwin with a detachment at Parap.
