Brief History

In December 1941 at Werribee in Victoria the pre war 3rd Cavalry Field Ambulance was mobilised as a unit within 2nd Cavalry Division. As was the only medical unit to the west of Melbourne it had detachments at Grovedale and Geelong. In February 1942 the Division changed name to 2nd Motorised Division and the Field Ambulance moved to Rowville, with detachments at Geelong, Dandenong and Lysterfield. In May the unit concentrated at Rowville before moving to Seymour in September. A reorganisation of motorised forces occurred in October 1942 and the Field Ambulance moved to WA as part of the 3rd Motorised Brigade Group.

Their initial location was Mullewa to support troops that might need to fight north of Geraldton. In March 1943 a detachment was sent to Yandanooka to service the recently arrived 1st Armoured Division troops. In July/August they moved to a new base mid way between Dandaragan and Moora. During January 1944 the unit was renamed 103rd Australian Light Field Ambulance and they moved to Chidlow with a detachment at Dandaragan. With the reduction of troop numbers in Western Australia, the 103rd Australian Light Field Ambulance left for disbanding in NSW during August 1944.
