Early Life
William Butcher was born to a soldiering family in the year 1829. Following his father’s death in service, William’s upbringing was thereafter the responsibility of his mother and a Colonel of his father’s regiment. On arrival in Australia at the port of Fremantle on the 17 of March 1841, William Butcher’s first vocation was shepherding sheep on the Beach Plains near Rockingham. Married Mary Ann Houghton on the 22 July 1852 at the Church of England of Ellensbrook (now All Saints Church, Upper Swan). The children of Mary Ann and William were: William, Sarah Anne, Alfred, Hugh John, Walter, James, Alice and Albert.
