Pre War

Commenced working for the railways on 10 Aug 1915 after passing a selection board and a medical. Initial employment as a junior in Perth. Granted leave to serve in the AIF.

War Service

On arrival in England was sent to the 1st Training Battalion at Fovant where he was allocated to the reinforcements for the 11th Battalion, but did not go overseas to France to join them.

From 17 Nov till 23 Nov 1918 he was admitted to the Sutton Veny hospital with influenza, and had another period in hospital from 8 Jan to 5 Feb 1919, this time with mumps. In Feb 1919 he was again hospitalised with influenza, as he was again in April 1919, however, this last time he was to remain there for 2 months.

Post War

His Railway records show that on his return from England he rejoined on 2 Nov 1919, and served for short periods at Narrogin, Mundijong and Manjimup before being posted to Pinjarra. Had a short period in Perth before moving to Busselton, and again a brief period in Geraldton before moving to Ballidu. In 1937 was stationmaster at Greenhills and in 1940 at Mullewa as the Goods Clerk. In 1944 he returned to Perth as the Clerk in charge of the night shift until he retired due to invalidity in 1955. In 1925 Walter married Mabel May McKinley in Pinjarra.
