Ernest's original enlistment was with the [[2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion]] serving with them from 2 Mar 1942 until the day before he resigned in order to join the RAAF on 22 May 1943, seeking to become a pilot.

Ernest's original attempt to enlist occurred on 2 Mar 1942 at Claremont, but the result was to defer his enlistment. Instead Ernest enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Armadale and was posted to the [[2ndrps unit, the 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion, so perhaps even at that point he had indicted a desire to join the RAAF.
