War Service

Entered Blackboy Hill camp on 8 Mar 1916 and on 12 Apr 1916 he was allocated to the 19th reinforcement draft for the 16th Battalion, travelling with them to England.

Following a further 3 months training with the 4th Training Battalion at Codford in England, Cyril proceeded overseas to France aboard HMT Princesse Clementine from Folkestone on 21 Dec 1916.

In France he was taken on the strength of the 16th Battalion on 2 Jan 1917 as they were on the move to Mametz. From 10 May until 28 May 1917 he was in hospital with the 56th Casualty Clearing Station recovering from influenza, and on his return he participated in the attack on German positions on the Messines ridge during 8 & 9 Jun 1917. Several days later he was the victim of gas shells, perhaps because of his earlier illness, and was evacuated from the battle field.

He rejoined the 16th Battalion on 27 Aug 1917 at Neuve Eglis where the battalion was re-equipping and training in preparation for another turn in the front lines.

He later developed pleurisy on 9 Jan 1918 which required him to spend best part of 3 months in hospital. Treated in turn by the 77th Field Ambulance, then the 2nd casualty Clearing Station and then the 2nd Australian General Hospital in Wimereux.

Evacuated to England aboard HMHS Western Australia, on 29 Jan 1918 he was admitted to the 1st London General Hospital in Camberwell, remaining in hospital until 2 Apr 1918, when he was discharged to the 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital. sent to No.2 Command Depot at Weymouth.

Eventually he was sent home to Australia. Hospitalised on return to Australia until 14 Sep 1918, before being discharged as medically unfit by the 5th Military District on 6 Oct 1918.
