Albert was first enlisted into the CMF on 19 Dec 1940 and posted to [[5th Australian Garrison Battalion]]. He was discharged from this unit on 6 Nov 1941. Albert re-enlisted on 20 Mar 1942 in the Voluntary Defence Corp, and was posted to the [[1st (Perth) VDC Battalion]]. His date of discharge from this unit is unknown but it would predate his enlistment in the RAAF on 2 Oct 1942.

On 14 Jul 1941 he was transferred to the Western Command HQ Band, and from there he was discharged on 6 Nov 1941 as medically unfit (stomach ulcer).

Albert's son Alan William Walmsley enlisted in the CMF, the VDC and then the RAAF, where he was a Temporary Warrant Officer in Canberra at time of discharge on 26 Feb 1946.
