Thelma's parents were Harold E. Newell and Marjorie R. Peters. The Newells were the owners of a garage on Albany Highway Kelmscott opposite the Ponderosa from the 1940s to the 1960s. Thelma had a brother named Geoff Newell, who stayed in the district and owned Genik Auto Electrics.
