Pre War
During 1937 Shirley attended the Byford School and had completed the 4th Year.
War Service
On 31 Dec 1943 Shirley enlisted in the Australian Women's Army Service at Claremont, and on 6 Jan 1944 she was sent to the 6th AWS Training Company in Claremont. At the end of the month she was transferred to the 25th AWAS Barrack on Rottnest Island and on 11 Nov 1944 Shirley was transferred to HQ Coast Artillery Fremantle. On 30 Dec 1944 Shirley celebrated a year in the service with a pay rise. The next day, 31 Dec 1944, she was sent to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for reposting.
On 1 Mar 1945 Shirley was posted to the 7th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot in Nungarin, east of Perth. While posted there she was admitted to the 75th Australian Camp Hospital from 30 Apr - 6 May 1945 for dental treatment. Follow up dental treatment from 12 - 16 May 1945 was again provided by the 75th Australian Camp Hospital.
Shirley was transferred to Victoria on 16 Jun 1945 where on 29 Jun 1945 she joined the 1st Australian Base Ordnance Depot at Bandiana. On 28 Mar 1946 Shirley was graded as an Acting Group 2 Storewoman but her service w3as coming to an end, and on 28 May 1946 she was transferred back to Western Australia to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot to await her discharge which occurred on 26 Jun 1946.
Post War
14 Mar 1996 Shirley 'Saw' was living at 7 Greenock street, Reservoir, Victoria.
