Pre War
John had served with the 25th Infantry Battalion in France during the 1914 - 1918 war. During 1919 John married Harriet Sleight in Perth. Harriet died on 28 Apr 1972 in Armadale, aged 89.
War Service
Fifty Three year old John enlisted on 20 Nov 1940 for full time duty with the Recruit Training Depot at Naval Base. On 20 April 1941 he was transferred to the No. 3 Training Battalion at Northam where on 10 Jun 1941 he was charged with "Disobeying a Lawful Command given by his superior Officer'. For this he received a fine of 10/- ($1).
On 23 Jun 1941 he was discharged on the grounds that he was unlikely to become an efficient soldier. Given that John was now 54 years of age, this seems to be unremarkable.
