Pre War

War Service

Charles enlisted on 5 Jan 1942 and was sent to the 13th Training Battalion at Northam. On 13 Mar 1942 Charles was found guilty of having been AWOL from midnight 8 March to 11:00am 11 Mar 1942. His fine was 10/- ($1), and he forfeited 2 days pay (12/- or $1.20). On 16 Mar 1942 he was transferred to the Recruit Training Battalion from where he was detached to Special Guard Duties. On 17 Jun 1942 Charles was charged with being AWOL from midnight 15 June until 6:00pm 16 Jun 1942. By this time the Recruit Training Battalion had become known as No. 3 Special Detachment AIF (WA)


On 17 Jun 194 22 Charles was again dealt with on an AWOL charge - absent from midnight 15 June until 6:00pm on 17 June. This time he was admonished and forfeited 2 days pay. On 14 Sep 1942 Charles was assessed by the 38th Australian Camp Hospital at Northam for arthritis in both knees, after which he was admitted the same day to the 118th Australian General Hospital. On 5 Oct 1942 he was discharged by the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot on the basis that he was engaged in a reserved occupation.

Post War

During 1949 Charles married Clare Elizabeth Lines in the local area.
