Arthur enlisted in the CMF on 2 Dec 1940, but it was not until late 1941 that he was called up for full time duty. In the meantime he had married Mary Grbelja in Perth. On 30 Oct 1941 Arthur was posted to the 11th Australian Infantry Battalion (City of Perth Regiment) and went into camp at Melville, and it was there on 17 Dec 1941 he was called up for full time duty.
On 26 Dec 1942 following a period of LWOP, Arthur was sent to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for reassignment, which took place on 1 Jan 1943 when he was posted to the 26th Australian Employment Company at Davilak. On 8 Feb 1943 he was transferred to the 7th Workshop & Park Company where after a few days leave he was detached to the section at York. On 16 October he was charged with Neglecting to obey Camp Standing Orders, the previous day for which he was fined 5/- (50 cents, roughly a days pay) On 22 Nov 1943 Arthur was transferred to the 68th Australian DCRE (Works), before moving again to the 12th Workshop & Park Company on 19 Jan 1944.
