War Service

Entered the Claremont camp for the Light Horse on 21 Oct 1914

Embarked for Gallipoli on 16 May 1915 from Alexandria. Wounded in Action and on 30 May 1915 embarked on HMHS Gascon for Alexandria. Admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital at Heliopolis on 7 Jun 1915. When admitted to 1AGH the bullet was still lodged in his neck. on 20 Jul 1915 Sam was transferred to the Convalescent Hospital at Ras-el-Tin. Discharged to duty on 5 Aug 1915 at Mustapha Barracks.

On 10 Aug 1915 Sam was again embarked for Gallipoli, this time on the Cawdor castle

On 9 Oct Sam was seen by the 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance near Fisherman's Hut at Anzac Cove and treated for severe diarrhoea before being transferred on 12 Oct 1915 to the 13th Casualty Clearing Station at Mudross on Lemnos Island. On 18 Oct 1915 Sam was admitted to the 1st Australian General Hospital in Heliopolis before being transferred on 14 Nov 1915 to Suez where he boarded HMAT A30 Borda for Australia on 15 Nov 1915

On 17 Mar 1917 Sam returned form Australia and joined the Details camp at Moascar. He was again taken on strength by the 3rd Light Horse Brigade on 26 Mar 1917 and on 13 June sent to the Cookery School at Ismailia before being transferred to the 3rd Light Horse Training Regiment.

Finally rejoined his old unit the 10th Light Horse Regiment on 6 Dec 1917 at Moascar before being taken on strength by the 3rd Light Horse Brigade headquarters. Granted early repatriation he left from Port Said on 29 Apr 1919
