Electoral Roll entries - 1916 with Alice at 'St Ives', Armadale, a butcher.
War Service
Although he enlisted in Western Australia, at some point between Jul and Oct 1917 (not recorded in his surviving records) Ellis travelled to Melbourne for specialist training.
Disembarking at Devonport he was sent to the 13th Training Battalion at Codford, before later transferring to the 12th Training Battalion on 11 Apr 1918. On 4 Dec 1918 he was again transferred, this time to No 4 Command Depot Hurdcott for return to Australia.
It appears that the partial deafness declared at the time of his enlistment had meant that he was not sent to the Western Front.
His discharge medical reports state that he can only hear when shouted at - a serious indication of the shortage of recruits offering their services in late 1917 and early 1918. On his return to Australia he was hospitalised at the 8th General Hospital, Fremantle from 10 Feb to 6 Jun 1919.
Discharged by 5th Military District on 23 Jun 1919. (Deafness)
