Pre War

Stewart had been an Air Training Corps Cadet for 23 months prior to enlistment (36132). He attended the Armadale State School until 7th Standard, and had been employed for 2 years as a Junior Craftsman in the Assay office of the Royal Mint.

War Service

Stewart nlisted at No. 4 RAAF Recruiting Centre on 8 Sep 1944, mustered as Air Crew Trade Group V, and was posted the same day to No. 5 Initial Training School RAAF to undertake Course No. 58 from 9 Sep 1944 to 29 Nov 1944. On 21 Nov 1944 Stewart was appointed as a Leading Aircraftman, and on 24 Nov 1944 he was remustered as Aircrew - Air Gunner, and posted on 15 Dec 1944 to No. 1 Initial Training School RAAF at Point Cook. On 2 Feb 1945 Stewart was transferred to the Air Gunnery School RAAF at West Dale, Victoria to participate in Air Gunners course No.53B from 4 Feb - 29 Mar 1945. Course completed, he received his Air Gunners badge and was promoteed Temporary Sergeant on 29 Mar 1945. On 20 Apr 1945 Stewart was transferred to No. 5 Personnel Depot RAAF in Perth. There on 11 Jun 1945 he was charged under AFA Section 15/2 with Whilst on Active Service, leaving his place of employment i.e. the A.C.F. Store, without authority" for which he was reprimanded.


He was posted on 14 Jun 1945 to No. 10 Stores Depot RAAF at Merredin, Western Australia and while here he was admitted to the Merredin District Hospital from 25 - 30 Jun 1945. Then on 17 Aug 1945 he was transferred from the Active List to the Air Force Reserve.
