Pre War

War Service

Robert enlisted at Claremont on 26 Jul 1940 and was sent to the Melville Training Depot on 1 Aug 1940. On 15 Aug 1940 he was transferred to the 2/28th Australian Infantry Battalion then being raised for service overseas. Robert was granted pre-embarkation leave from 27 Nov until 3 Dec 1940 and was to embark for overseas on 3 Jan 1941. However, on 2 Jan 1941 Robert was transferred to the No. 2 Training Battalion, and on 6 Jan 1941 transaferred again, to the No. 3 Training Battalion. He was further transferred on 14 Jan 1941, to the 13th Australian Infantry Training Battalion.


On 17 January Robert was admitted briefly to the Northam Camp Hospital, before being admitted the same day to the York District Hospital with Pleurisy. Robert was released to his unit on 22 Feb 1941, but on 5 Mar 1941 he was back in hospital, this time the 110th Australian Base Hospital with Neuro Circulatory Aesthenia. He was released on 10 Mar 1941 to the Lady Mitchell Convalescent Home where on 26 Mar 1941 a Medical Board declared him to be Medically Unfit. On 31 Mar 1941 Robert was discharged.
