During 1937 Donald had married Mary S Haynes in the Canning district.

War Service

Don was initially enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps, but on being called up for full time service on 11 May 1942 he was promoted Acting Sergeant and then on 29 May 1942 transferred to the 29th Australian Garrison Battalion's North West detachment at Port Hedland. On 1 Dec 1942 he was posted to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for re-assignment which necessitated him reverting to the rank of Private on 9 Dec 1942 when he was posted to the 10th Australian Light Horse Regiment ww2.

On 25 Mar 1943 Don was sent on an Intelligence training course before changing his enlistment on 30 Jun 1943 to the 2nd AIF. On 8 Jan 1943 Don had been medically re-assessed as Class A1. However, on 12 Jul 1943 Don was admitted to 110th Australian Base Hospital to be treated for a hernia. He was released to the LM Camp Hospital on 1 Aug 1943 and from there to the 109th Australian Convalescent Depot on 19 Aug 1943. From 8 - 16 Sep 1943 he was admitted to the 38th Australian Camp Hospital, returning to the convalescent depot until 6 Oct 1943 when he rejoined the 10th Light Horse. On 22 Oct 1943 he was appointed Lance Corporal, having been graded as Trade Group TG2 Intelligence Duties on 24 Sep 1943.

On 12 May 1944 Don entrained for New South Wales with his unit, reverting to Trooper on 19 May 1944 and on 6 Jun 1944 he was transferred to the 16th Australian Infantry Training Battalion. On 17 June he was admitted to the 104th Australian General Hospital with a lacerated left thumb. Two days later he was transferred to the 113th Australian General Hospital until 3 Jul 1944 when he was released to the 103rd Australian Convalescent Depot. On 6 Jul 1944 he was re-admitted to 113th Australian General Hospital in need of a skin graft for his hand, before being released to the convalescent depot again on 15 Jul 1944. On 17 Jul 1944 he was admitted to the 68th Australian Camp Hospital and on 25 Jul 1944 he was released again to 103rd Australian Convalescent Depot. Finally on 31 Aug 1944 he was transferred to the New South Wales Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for re-allocation.

This occurred on 6 Sep 1944 when he was sent to the 23rd Australian Infantry Training Battalion. On 11 Dec 1944 he was medically reclassified as 'B1' and on 12 Feb 1945 he was granted five weeks LWOP and sent to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot. By 2 May 1945 Don had returned to New South Wales, as he was admitted to the 70th Australian Camp Hospital that day with a Hernia, and two days later sent on to the 113th Concord Military Hospital They released Don to the Ritz Convalescent Home on 8 Jun 1945 before he was released to the 103rd Australian Convalescent Depot on 6 Jul 1945. On 21 Aug 1945 Don was posted to the New South Wales Recruit Reception & General Details Depot. On 27 Sep 1945 he was posted to the 23rd Australian Infantry Training Battalion who released him to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge, which took place on 25 Oct 1945 (Compassionate grounds).
