On 2 Jun 1937 Tasman enlisted in the Militia with Regimental No 244989, and served with the HQ Squadron of 10th Light Horse Regiment until his discharge on 6 Feb 1939. At that stage his NOK was his mother (Mrs. Mary Ellen Ewart). His enrolment form indicates that he had also previously served with the Militia's 28th Battalion and the 10th Light Horse Regiment from January 1931 until he moved to the North West (?).

War Service

Tasman enlisted on 8 October 1941, and two days later was sent to the HQ Western Command Training Depots, and on 13 Dec 1941 he was posted as a Clerk TGIII. On 26 Mar 1942 he was the subject of a Court of Inquiry at Northam. He was found to have been an Illegal Absentee from 5:45am on 5 Mar 1942 and that as of 26 March he was still absent. In addition he was deficient of £7.4.5 value of Commonwealth Government property. He rejoined his unit and was then sent to the Fremantle Detention Barracks where he served 27 days detention. Total stoppage of pay was 56 days.

On 29 Apr 1942 Tasman was transferred to the AASC Group Reinforcements, and 4 weeks later on 27 May 1942 he was appointed Lance Corporal. However. on 16 Jun 1942 he was charged with Conduct to the Prejudice of Good Order and Military Discipline in that he was gambling in his hut. For this he relinquished his trade status and his rank. He then went AWOL from 11:59pm on 30 Jun 1942 to 11:00 am on 2 Jul 1942. Admonished he was docked 2 days pay (12/-), and transferred the next day to 'Y' DID 3rd Australian Corps. He oved again, on 25 Jul 1942 he was transferred out via the General Duties Depot to the 124th Australian General Transport Company.

Tasman was promoted Acting Corporal on 23 Oct 1942, but on 4 May 1943 his health required him to face a medical board which classified him as Class 'B'. Given his previous employment was with the Government railways he was discharged on 28 Jun 1943 to rejoin the WAGR workforce.
