Pre War

During 1935 Alan married Gladys Ellen Joyner (1914 -2010) in Southern Cross. Glad died on 22 Sep 2010, aged 96 in Bateman. At the time of his enlistment they had three children: Noreen Edith who was six years old, Florence Ethne four, and Lorelle Ellen, two years old.

War Service

During 1942 Alan had sought to enlist in the RAAF, however he was deemed to be medically unfit. Alan then joined the Volunteer Defence Corps on 22 Mar 1942 in Armadale and was allocated to 'D' Company 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion. On 1 Jul 1942 he was promoted Corporal in the Mortar Platoon of 'D' Company. Promoted to Sergeant on 17 Sep 1942, her was now in HQ Company's No 3 Platoon. His Army number was changed on 6 Nov 1943 to W61984 from 67668, but no explanation as to why.


On 7 Feb 1944 Alan was struck of strength of the VDC battalion.

Post War

Electoral Roll entries: 1949 - 1968 at Eighth road, Armadale, farmer; 1972 - 1980 at Greys road, Armadale, farmer.

Notes

Together with his wife, Alan ran a business producing horticultural seedings known as Gladalan Nursery on Armadale road, one of the largest employers in the district in its time.
