During 1927 Joe married Isla Cassie Ivy Ramm (1907-1975) in Perth.

War Service
Enlisted in the VDC on 22 Mar 1942 ta Armadale. On 1 Jul 1942 he was appointed a Lance Corporal in 'D' Company. Joe was given a new regimental number (W62071) on 10 Nov 1943, and on 16 Feb 1944 he was discharged (Struck off Strength) at his own request. Total service was 1 year 323 days.

During 1962 Joe and Isla enjoyed a 25 day holiday abroad, returning to Australia from Singapore on 2 May 1962 aboard the MV Gorgon, travelling 1st Class. Isla died on 26 Jul 1975 aged 67 in Armadale.
