Pre War

During 1922 Horace married Phoebe Amelia Florence Bingham (1903 - 1962) in Perth. Phoebe died on 22 Dec 1962 in Augusta, aged 59. They had four children: Laurence Harold Smith (1923 - 1996); Joy Smith (1928 - 2004); Frederick Smith (1930 - 1976); and Leslie Smith (1933 - 2010). During WW!, Horace had spent 81 days in training at Blackboy Hill in late 1918 before the war ended.

War Service

Enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps on 15 Jul 1942 at Kalamunda. Horace was a member of 2 Platoon, 'A' Company of the 12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion. On 7 Feb 1944 at Pinjarra Horace was allotted a new Army number of W93440. On 29 May 1944 he was appointed Lance Corporal before being placed on the Reserve on 31 Jul 1944.
