Pre War

During 1921 Philip was a student at the Hopelands Primary School. He had also attended the Serpentine school. During 1935 Philip had married Hilda May Vivian in Perth. He remarried during 1941 to Hilda Martha Jane Mead (1909 - 1990) Hilda died on 28 Jan 1990 in Maylands. For a time in 1936 Philip was a casual labourer employed by the Western Australian Government Railways at Dwellingup Mills, but at time of enlistment he was working as a log hauler for WA Salvage Coy.

War Service

On 26 Apr 1942 Philip enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Mundijong, and was allocated to the 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion, but transferred soon after on 1 Jul 1942 to the 12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion. On 31 Jul 1944 along with the rest of his unit he was placed in the Reserve.
