Pre War
War Service
On 6 Mar 1941 Richard was enlisted in the CMF and allocated to the 16th Australian Infantry Battalion (Cameron Highlanders Regiment). He entered basic training camp at Melville, completing his training on 14 Oct 1941. Richard was called up for full time service on 16 Dec 1941. He enjoyed two periods of leave without pay for seasonal employment in July and October 1942. On 23 Feb 1943 he and his unit boarded a train, arriving in Adelaide on 28 Feb 1943 and then moving to the Northern Territory on 19 Mar 1943, arriving on 24 Mar 1943, the delay being caused by his being taken off the train north at Port Pirie on 1 Mar 1943 and admitted to their civilian hospital. Released on 17 March he continued to the Northern territory.
On 22 Nov 1943 Richard was transferred to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge, which followed on 9 Dec 1943.
Post War
During 1951 Richard married Hilda Betty Gibbs. They had two sons and a daughter.
