Pre War
On 1 Dec 1936 he married Eileen McVeigh. At the time of his enlistment they had two children.

War Service
Enlisted at the Claremont Recruit Reception centre on 21 Jul 1941, and on 29 Jul 1941 he was sent to the 3rd Training Battalion at Northam to begin his training. From 7 - 31 Aug 1941 he was sent to undergo training at the Motor Transport School of Instruction at Claremont before returning to Northam where on 10 Oct 1941 he transferred to General Reinforcements and the 4th Training Battalion. Training completed, from 16 - 22 Oct 1941 he was granted pre-embarkation leave, with the intention that on 7 Nov 1941 he was to embark for overseas. However, this did not occur, with him being transferred to the reinforcements for the 2/32nd Australian Infantry Battalion in Northam. On 12 Dec 1941 he was admitted to the 110th Australian Base Hospital in Hollywood, before being released to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot on 14 Jan 1942 for medical evaluation which resulted on 20 Jan 1942 with him being discharged on 21 Jan 1942, on medical grounds.
