Brief History

The original unit was the Western Command Detention barracks which was formed as an annex to the civilian gaol at Fremantle from March 1940 until December 1941. In April 1942 their name was changed to Western Australian Line of Communications Area Detention Barracks, and in January 1943 this was simplified to 11th Australian Detention Barracks. Issues arose between them and the WA Prisons Department that led to the unit relocating in May 1943 to Parkeston near Kalgoorlie where they occupied a former Internment Camp. However, with the issues resolved, the unit moved back to Fremantle where it was to continue to operate with reduced staffing until the end of the war.
