Pre War

War Service

Mobilised on 6 Mar 1941 at Claremont, he was taken on strength part time by the 3rd Remount Squadron at Guildford on 28 Jul 1941, completing his first training camp on 25 Oct 1941. On 29 Nov 1941 he was transferred to a holding unit for re-allocation and he was called up for full time duty on 8 Jan 1942 and was posted to the 5th Australian Garrison Battalion. On 15 Apr 1943 he was taken on strength by the 109th Australian Light Anti Aircraft Regiment before being transferred again on 10 May 1943 to the 6th Australian Infantry Battalion (Royal Melbourne Regiment).


On 3 Jun 1943 he entrained for Victoria where he joined the battalion on 1 Aug 1943. On 30 Aug 1943 he was admitted to the 48th Australian Camp Hospital, returning to duty on 4 September, before leaving for the Northern Territory on 11 Sep 1943 where he arrived on 21 Sep 1943. On 27 Sep 1943 he was detached to the HQ 2nd Australian Infantry Brigade's Defence and Employment Battalion until 11 Oct 1943 when he returned to his unit.


On 24 Jun 1944 John was transferred to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for discharge to rural industry work, and was discharged on 18 Jul 1944.
