War Service
Enlisted in Perth, but embarked for Egypt from Adelaide aboard RMS Morea on 22 Feb 1917. John left the Morea in Bombay and boarded HMAT A47 Mashobra there for Suez where he was disembarked on 18 Mar 1917. On arrival in Egypt John marched in to the Details Camp at Moascar, and on 4 May 1917 he was transferred to 'C' Troop of the 1st Signals Squadron, serving at the AIF HQs in Cairo. The next day he was allocated a Driver's role within the unit, before again transferring this time on 4 Aug 1917 to the Australian Pack Wireless Section as a driver
In Dec 1917 he was ill with pleurisy, and treated by the 35th casualty Clearing Station before being passed to the 43rd Stationary Hospital at Kilo 151, and then to the 24th Stationary Hospital in Kantara (El Quantara), and finally the 14th Australian General Hospital in Abbassia from 14 - 21 Jan 1918 before being discharged to a rest camp where he was examined by a Medical Board. February was spent in rest camps before a posting to signals base in Moascar in Mar 1918. On 13 Jul 1918 he was posted to 2 Signals Squadron and allocated to 4 Signals Troop and again performed the role of driver.
Ill with Venereal Disease on 29 Nov 1918 he was treated by the 5th Light Horse Field Ambulance and evacuated from West Beirut aboard HMAT A62 Wandilla operating as HMHS Wandilla to the 17th General Hospital at Alexandria. Following treatment he was released to the 32nd Casualty Clearing Station before rejoining the Signals Training Unit at Moascar on 22 Jan 1919. Total ineffective period was 55 days.
On 22 Mar 1919 he was again with the 2nd Signals Squadron at Moascar, but by 24 May 1919 he again was hospitalised by the 4th Light Horse Field Ambulance, this time with debility (pleurisy), remaining under care until 28 Jun 1919. Discharged 5th Military District 29 Sep 1919.
