War Service

Initial service after enlistment was with the 46th Militia Battalion, but after 3 months was exempted for research work. Then served as an officer in the Militia from 4 Oct 1942 until 7 Jan 1943, and then the AIF from 8 Jan 1943. initially placed on the Special List for duty at Victoria Barracks in Melbourne. On 22 Feb 1943 Samuel married Marjorie Lochhead in Victoria. On 1 Oct 1943 he was transferred from the Special List to the Australian Army Psychology Service, and on 22 Nov 1943 he was detached tot he No. 3 Australian Psychology Testing Section.

His son Robert was born on 12 Apr 1944 and on 15 Sep 1944 he was reallocated to the 2nd Mobile Aptitude Testing Section as its OC. On 8 Dec 1944 he entrained at Spencer street, Melbourne for Sydney, where he was promoted Captain on 17 Jan 1945. On 26 Apr 1945 he was transferred to the 2nd Australian Psychology Section.

From 30 Apr 1945 until May 1945 he was given treatment for conjunctivitis, before being posted tot he 6th Australian Vocational Guidance Unit in Tasmania on 23 Jul 1945. Transferred to WA on 9 Apr 1946 he was sent to the Western Command Discharge Depot, where his appointment was terminated on 26 May 1946.

Post War

Electoral Roll entries: 1949 at 26 Fulham road, Alphington, Victoria, University Lecturer; 1963 - 1977 at 3 Storey street, Parkville, Victoria, teacher; 1980 at 10 Spence avenue Aireys Inlet, Victoria, retired.

On 7 Aug 1954 Samuel, together with wife Marjorie, son Robert Battle (10), son Ian James (7), and daughter Barbara Joy (6) sailed from London on SS Strathnaver for Fremantle. Samuel's occupation was recorded as Teacher. On 30 Oct 1958 Samuel and Marjorie sailed from London on the SS Stratheden for Melbourne.

Sam appears to have joined the staff of the new Psychology Department of Melbourne University soon after his discharge from the Army, and remained with it, rising to the Professorial level before retirement. He was also involved with the administration of the Arts Faculty.
