Pre War

During 1880 - 1884 Frank served on a clipper ship the Blackadder, signing on at age 17 as an apprentice. On 18 Apr 1884 he was granted a Certificate of Competency as a Second Mate. With the death of his father in January 1887 he joined his older brother in running his father's building firm. In late 1889 he married Nellie Lenham in Margate, and in early 1890 their daughter Hilda was born.

In 1902 Frank appears in the British Army List as a serving Officer of the 1st Sussex Royal Engineers (a volunteer Regiment). This unit had sailed for South Africa on 30 Mar 1901 and served in the later stages of the Boer War, returning to England after May 1902.

On 18 May 1906, Frank and his family boarded the RMS Orontes for Fremantle where they arrived on 27 Jun 1906. Frank was described as a 41 year old Engineer, accompanied by his wife Nellie aged 39, and daughter Hilda, 16.

On 18 Jan 1909 Frank was appointed as a Provisional Captain in the Australian Intelligence Corps (Western Australian District). The 1917 Electoral Roll lists Frank as an Agriculturist, and Nellie as a poultry keeper living in Gosnells, so it is likely that they moved there prior to Frank re-enlisting in the British Army.

War Service

At some point after the commencement of the war, Frank made contact with the British Army as he appears on British Army Lists for November 1915, June 1916, May 1917, and August 1918 with the rank of Captain. Previously retired Army Officers were often used to assist with recruiting, or office duties releasing younger officers to serve in the field.

Frank was made a Member of the British Empire (MBE) in the King's Birthday Honour List in June 1919 for valuable services rendered in connection with the war. Frank relinquished his commission on 11 Feb 1920.

Frank returned to Australia, arriving in Fremantle aboard SS Megantic on 13 Feb 1920

Post War

On his return Frank and his family located themselves in Verna street, Gosnells where they remained until Frank's death.
