On 14 Jun 1917 Fred entered Blackboy Hill camp, and after some 4 months training in WA was sent to NSW where on 17 Oct 1917 he became an Engineer reinforcement. From 5 Nov 1917 until 20 Dec 1917 he attended the Equitation School in Roseville. Returning to the Engineering reinforcements on 20 Dec 1917, he sailed with them for England.
On arrival in England he was sent to a training battalion at Parkhouse before proceeding to France through Southampton on 4 Oct 1918, and on 20 Oct 1918 he was taken on strength by the 1st Army Troops Company. On 10 Feb 1919 he returned to England as he had negotiated leave from 11 Mar 1919 until 30 Nov 1919 with fees paid, pay and subsistence, to allow him to attend University in London to study Engineering. He had applied for permission to be discharged in England, but this did no occur.
Discharged by the 5th Military District on 19 Mar 1920.

Post War
On 24 Oct 1924, 26 year old Fred, described as a Civil Engineer leaves London aboard SS Khiva, travelling 1st class for Singapore.
In 1926 Fred married Amy Johnson Litchfield (1898- 1986). Three daughters including Patsy Anne Maw (1932 - 1982) born in Victoria; Barbara Jane and Frederica Ruth.
Fred served during WW2 as a RAAF Wing Commander at RAAF HQ until 4 Oct 1943 with Service No. 252098. In 1934 Fred reports the loss of his medals in a burglary at Caulfield in Victoria.
