Tom enlisted part time on 21 Oct 1941 and served with HQ Western Command's 20th Defence and Employment Platoon before he was mobilised for full time duty on 23 Feb 1942, and although his posting was to HQs Western Command, he remained detached to 20th D&E Platoon. On 21 Apr 1942 Tom's posting became HQs 3rd Australian Corps, but still with the 20th D & E Platoon. He subsequently enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 12 Dec 1942. From 11 Mar 1943 until 7 Apr 1943 Tom was granted a period of Leave without Pay. Tom was charged on 20 Sep 1943 with having neglected to maintain his rifle in firing condition, and was awarded 7 Days Confined to Barracks.
On 24 Jan 1944 Tom was transferred to the 3rd Australian Corps Defence and Employment Platoon as a Trade Group II Cook. He was posted to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot on 1 Jun 1945 for reposting, and subsequently on 9 Jun 1945 he was posted to 1st Australian Base Depot Personnel in New South Wales, arriving there on 16 Jun 1945. On 28 Jun 1945 he was posted to British Borneo Civil Affairs Unit] and he embarked in Sydney on 31 Jul 1945 aboard SS Joseph Carrigan for Morotai, disembarking there on 21 Aug 1945. He re-embarked on the same ship on 27 August and disembarked at Labuan on 1 Sep 1945.
Posted to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot on 14 Nov 1945, on 23 Nov 1945 Tom embarked in Labuan North Borneo on the HMS Glengyle for Brisbane where he disembarked on 3 Dec 1945. On 18 Dec 1945 he had arrived home, posted to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot's Discharge Section. He was discharged on 21 Dec 1945.
