Pre War

During 1932 Charles married Myrtle Letitia Moore (1910 - 1990) in Fremantle. They had a son Vernon Herbert Rutherford died after 13 days in 1936, and a daughter Lynette Elaine Rutherford (Hanks) (1940-2012).

War Service

On 26 Apr 1942 Charles enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps at Mundijong where he was allocated to the 12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion. Charles was transferred to the 8th Platoon, 'C' Company at Hoffman's Mill on 15 Sep 1942 and then on 26 Oct 1942 he was promoted Sergeant, and on the same day appointed Signals Sergeant. On 19 Jul 1943 Charles reverted to Private at his own request and was discharged, again at his own request on 18 Dec 1943.
