Ben entered camp on 8 Nov 1915 and 2 days later was told that he was being allocated to the Artillery Corps, and that this involved going to Melbourne for specialist training. On 15 Dec 1915 he was appointed Gunner, and on 12 Feb 1916 allocated to the 10th Field Artillery Brigade then being raise din Australia as part of the 4th Division. Following their training they embarked for England, arriving there on 14 Sep 1916 and moving to Swanage where they continued training until they were sent to France from Folkestone aboard HMT Golden Eagle on 25 Feb 1917.
In Étaples on 9 Mar 1917 he was transferred to the 4th Division Ammunition Column. On 30 Sep 1917 Ben was wounded. Seen by the 3rd Canadian Casualty Clearing Station the next day, he was sent on to the 26th General Hospital with a shrapnel wound to his left side on 6 Oct 1917. On 30 Oct 1917 it was decided to move him to England aboard HS Pieter de Coninck. On arrival in England he was admitted to the 2nd Eastern General Hospital in Brighton who cared for him until 8 Dec 1917 when he was released to the 3rd Command Depot at Hurdcott. While there he was reclassified and reverted to Gunner from Driver.
On 3 Jan 1918 he was transferred to the 2nd Command Depot at Weymouth to prepare for his return to Australia. Discharged by the 5th Military District on 9 Apr 1918.
