After three months at Blackboy Hill camp, Sid was allocated to the 19th reinforcement draft for the 16th Battalion and travelled with them to England as an acting Corporal..
On arrival in England he was sent to the 4th training Battalion at Codford on 25 Sep 1916 for war preparedness training. At Codford he overstayed leave by 4 days for which he was reduced to Private and had 5 days pay stopped.
On 28 Nov 1916 Sid proceeded overseas to France through Folkestone onboard SS Princess Henriette. Joined the 16th Battalion on 16 Dec 1916 as it moved from Ribemont to Cardonette for reorganisation and specialist training.
From 5 - 15 Apr 1917 Sid was hospitalised with scabies, and was again hospitalised on 1 Apr 1918 with an injury to his hand (deformed thumb) which occurred near Herberteun in France. The injury required him to be evacuated to England aboard the HS Princesse Elisabeth, with the injury preventing from rejoining the battalion.
In June 1918 Sid spent time in the Bulford VD Hospital, before on 7 Jan 1919 when Sid was taken on strength by the Australian Army Pay Corps. Soon after he was promoted to Corporal. On 30 Sep 1919 he was detached to his old unit in order to travel home with them.
Disembarked in Melbourne, and discharged at 3rd Military District on 26 Feb 1920.
