War Service

William enlisted on a full time basis with the Militia on 26 Mar 1945. On 3 Apr 1945 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF, and on 17 Apr 1945 William was posted to the 5th Australian Recruit Training Battalion in New South Wales. On 14 May his training unit changed to the 2nd Australian Recruit Training Battalion. He was then transferred on 14 Jun 1945 to the 35th Australian Infantry Training Battalion. With the war over and the Army winding down, on 1 Oct 1945 William was posted to the Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for reallocation.

On 10 Oct 1945 William was posted to the 10th Australian Garrison Battalion, where he was granted proficiency pay on 27 October. On 6 Feb 1946 he was transferred to a holding unit for the British Commonwealth Occupation Forces in Japan. To prepare he was transferred to the 16th Australian Infantry Training Brigade. However, it appears that he was not chosen to join the Japanese Occupation force as he was again transferred back to Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot for reallocation on 20 Apr 1946.

On 3 May 1946 William is again back with the 10th Australian Garrison Battalion, detached on 4 Jun 1946 to the Advanced Supply Depot at Spencers Brook. On 17 Jun 1946 he was transferred to the 26th Australian Works Company, and then on 14 Nov 1946 transferred to the 7th Australian Advanced Ordnance Depot. On 10 Jan 1947 William joined Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot's Discharge Section and on 10 Jan 1947 his Army service came to an end.
