Mervyn enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 15 Aug 1944 at Claremont and he was sent to the Recruit Training Centre locally before being transferred on 1 Dec 1944 to the 2nd Australian Infantry Training Brigade at Bathurst in New South Wales, arriving there on 10 Jan 1944.
