On 6 Mar 1941 Thomas enlisted at the Drill Hall in Mounts Bay road, Perth in the CMF and was allocated to the [[16th Australian Infantry Battalion (Cameron Highlanders)]].On 17 Jul 1941 he was taken into the No 3 Camp at Melville to undergo basic training, finishing on 14 Oct 1941. Thomas married Connie Buckman (1916 - 1980) in Trinity Church, Perth on 29 Aug 1946. They had two daughters including Susan Ann Halliday (1947 - 2015).
