On 21 Jan 1942 John enlisted part time in the [[19th Australian Garrison Battalion]] at Claremont and on 26 Feb 1942 he was called up for full time service. His trade Grouping was deemed to be TG II (Intelligence duties). On 10 Nov 1943 John was promoted to Acting Corporal, losing the Trade grouping pay, and was soon after set on a course at the 3rd Corps Training Centre at Harvey. On 31 mar 1944 his rank of Corporal was confirmed.
