Original enlistment was in the Militia (CMF) when he was called up on 13 Feb 1942 and given Regimental No W57701. On 6 may 1942 he was appointed Lance Bombardier, and on 7 Jun 1942 to Acting Bombardier. From 19 to 31 Jul 1942 he attended NCO School. Joseph's Regimental Number changed to WX25522 when on 19 Jul 1942 he enlisted in the 2nd AIF.
