Mervyn enlisted in the 2nd AIF on 15 Aug 1944 at Claremont and he was sent to the Recruit Training Centre locally before being transferred on 1 Dec 1944 to the 2nd Australian Infantry Training Brigade at Bathurst in New South Wales, arriving there on 10 Jan 1944. On 28 Dec 1944 he was posted to the 2nd Australian Motor Transport Training Depot at Bonegilla to undertake a course for Military drivers. On 11 Feb 1945 he was then enrolled in a Driver/Mechanics course. On its completion he was transferred to the 23rd Australian Infantry Training Battalion which ran from 12 February until 17 Mar 1945.
