John enrolled in the VDC on 26 Dec 1941 and was taken on  for full time duty. On 9 Jan 1942 he was posted to No. 2 Post (Mt Flora) before transferring on 17 Apr 1942 tot he [[29th Australian Garrison Battalion]]. The same day he was promoted Acing Corporal, before being transferred on 11 May 1942 to the [[5th Australian Garrison Battalion]]. On 3 June at his own request he reverted to Private and was p[osted to the District Financial Office. He was sick at home from 16 - 19 Nov 1942, and then promoted to Corporal on 1 Dec 1942.

A year later, on 14 Dec 1943 he was promoted to Acting Sergeant, with that rank confirmed on 14 Mar 1944. However, on 27 Jun 1944 his medicl classificaion was changed to B2 chronic indegestion (gastric ulcer). On 20 Oct 1945 John was admitted to [[110th AUstralian base Hospital]] in Nedlands before being transferred to [[71st Australian Camp Hospital]] on 26 Oct 1945. On 12 Nov 1945 he was released from the hospital to the [[Western Command Recruit Reception & General Details Depot]]. On 21 Nov 1945 the decision was made to dischard John, and this toook place on 23 Nov 1945.
