Pre War
on 5 Feb 1938 Herb had married Ethel Mavis Carthew (1918 - 2015) locally. Ethel died on 12 Feb 2015 in Yanchep.

War Service
At Armadale on 22 Mar 1942 Herbert enlisted in the Volunteer Defence Corps and was allocated to 2nd (Fremantle) VDC Battalion. On 6 Nov 1943 his Army number was changed from W67618 to W62328, and on 1 May 1945 he was transferred to the Reserve. However, on 28 Jul 1945 he is shown as transferring to the 12th (Jarrah) VDC Battalion, before being finally struck off strength on 15 Oct 194 when all VDC units were disbanded.
